So much love and fun on Friday night at The Standard. A mega thank you to Claire Darrow who makes things happen there and who got me involved in making a new edition and piece for The Shop. If you’re loving what the shop looks like and all the goods within just look for Claire…her magic put it all together. And Anna Sheffield, you know, the beauty that makes all these jewels…she’s got some preeeeettty nice pieces in there to see, try on, and hope to go home with. But back to being lucky. It’s Valentine’s day and I’m in Madrid for my sweet’s show. I feel like quite the jet-setter. My project then off to another. I can hope this is a sign of my new year. Year of the Tiger! I don’t know anyone really in Madrid so if you’re reading this and you’re here, come to Brian’s show opening Feb. 17th! The work looks awesome! http://www.galeriajavierlopez.com/ I’ll be here indulging in art, wine, food, and wandering the streets… Thanks again to everyone who came to support the opening of The Shop and to check out my new work

All For You

Hi All,

I want to let you know about a new edition I have made exclusively for The Standard. The Standard Shop along with my edition and a new installation will open Friday, February 12th.

“All For You” is a limited edition of 50 porcelain apples. Each is unique and comes in a wooden box that has been hand burned with the edition details, signed, and numbered.

Working with the title of the edition, I will also create a new installation with Ring Pop candy on the interior wall of the shop. “All For You” will be left to melt and transform over time.

The edition is available on The Standard’s website and beginning February 12th will be available at the Shop.

Please visit the shop to see the edition and the installation when you have some time. The Shop’s entrance is around the corner from the hotel’s main entrance:

R.I.P JD Salinger

catcher-in-the-rye-cover

I remember when I used to hate to read and my older sister tried to encourage me by recommending her favorite books.
When I read Catcher in the Rye, I wrote her a letter telling her how much I loved the book and I said, “OK, I’d like to read more of JD”. She couldn’t wait to write me back and called…she was dying laughing telling me how I shouldn’t refer to authors by their first name! Rather, I should have said “OK, I’d like to read more Salinger”. She followed by saying, it’s not like he’s your friend. I said, maybe he will be. That made her laugh even harder…

The day after i got back from the whirlwind of Art Basel Miami 2009- another blog to come with some Miami highlights- us ladies got together for a craf-ty day organized by the amazing Robyn Forest. Simone Shubuck led the way with ornaments and Cindy Greene did a how-to in silkscreening, and I brought some goodies together so we could make terrariums. We had a fun day among awesome women…Anna Sheffield was in attendance and brought Marigold seeds to add to the mix. We were craft-ing with fellow blogger- Shelly, along with Gillian, Athena, Michelle, Annabel, Alex & Juliet. We’re planning another for next week so stay tuned. More tasty snacks, good people, and new craft-i-ness to come! Hosting at my studio soon…

A Good Night

rxart_erickelleykelley1

Last night Brian and me had quite a night. It started off at his book signing at Gagosian’s new shop for RxArt’s new coloring book with work by so many amazing artists to support their organization. If you haven’t heard of RxArt, please check them out: http://rxart.net/
A lot of people came out for a good time and to support the project and RxArt. I had a personal inner-head-fan-out-session when Parker Posey showed up. I mean… Party Girl…Best in Show! okok…
We met up with friends and went to check out Eric Haze’s show. Good work, good tunes by DJ A-Trak & DJ Neil Armstrong, and a lot of good friends.. It felt like a reunion from the mid 90s- it was awesome to see everyone.
The night could have ended there, but we were off to see Mike Kelley’s performance for Performa. It was amazing, theatrical, sweaty, and so fun. After the excitement and feeling inspired that an artist like Mike Kelley that has already created so many memorable and important works continues to…we settled in for a drink at the Norwood and then called it a night.
A memorable night indeed.

Just what is it that makes today’s painting so different, so appealing?

November 5 – December 23, 2009
Reception: Thursday, November 5, 6-8pm

GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY is pleased to present Just what is it that makes today’s painting so different, so appealing?, a group painting exhibition.

The landscape of American painting has changed radically over the past several decades. Although many leading figures working in the medium have divergent styles, there are visible commonalities latent within much of the genre. Just what is it that makes today’s painting so different, so appealing? seeks to create a dialogue between the works of several artists shaping the terrain of contemporary American painting, exploring the interplay of overlapping themes that appear across the works. Using Frank Stella’s Odelsk III (Polish Village #11) as the historical referent, this exhibition traces the motifs of the minimalist line and shape; vibrant use of color and material; and Pop culture imagery throughout the paintings on display. Featuring works by:

Michael Bevilacqua
George Condo
Steve DiBenedetto
Keith Haring
KAWS
Erik Parker
Steven Parrino
Lisa Ruyter
David Salle
Michael Scott
Frank Stella
John Tremblay

Just what is it that makes today’s painting so different, so appealing? provokes the viewer to explore the je ne sais quoi that makes American painting what it is today.

Please join us for a reception on Thursday, November 5th from 6-8pm.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm. For further information please contact Julie Bills at 646.336.7183 or info@geringlopez.com.

Brooklyn Studio Tour

studios

I helped to organize studio tours for a group of Anderson Ranch supporters last week and it was so much fun. Not only to check out what everyone had going on, but also to be with a group of people that just love seeing new things and getting involved with how people work.

All the artists were so generous taking time to have us over and allowing us into their worlds.
I won’t reveal photos of the work because a lot of it was in-progress, but here are a few snapshots from the day.
Anderson Ranch not only supports artists for residencies like the one I had the luxury to be a part of, they also have amazing workshops and lectures by visiting artists like the crew we visited. I think a few of the people we visited may wind up spending some time in the beautiful Colorado mountains sooner than later…
Thank you to Jenny Dubnau, Rico Gatson, Glenn Goldberg, Adam Helms, Robert Lazzarini, Erik Parker, and Fred Tomaselli for inviting us into their studios.

This weekend- Saturday and Sunday!

Back from London…

london

My trip started on a sad note when I heard of a friend’s passing as I landed. I thought of you daily as I wandered the streets thinking about how many people have loved you, love you…our time was short but I’ll hold onto that…

It was off to hard work, good times, love with my ladies Shaniqwa & Kate and their crew, more work, more good times.
Shaniqwa Jarvis organized a show out there titled Wish you Were Here that I went out to install a piece for. There was an awesome crew of people in it: Angelo Baque, Peter Chung, Claw, Joey Gallagher, Jason Oliver Goodman, Jay Guillermo, Shaniqwa Jarvis, Todd Jordan, Vashtie Kola, David Shadi Perez, Abigail Portner, Marc Razo Rafael Rios, Peter Sutherland, & Frances Tulk-Hart.
My piece, “Love, Lover, Loving, Loved, Loves”, was made possible by the generous support from Topps. Thank you!!!

Not too much time to run around, but enough to check out some awesome local candy, beautiful skies, eat some of the best Indian food I’ve had at LaHore, good times in London bodegas, the pool at The Shoreditch House, late nights and early mornings with my lady Shaniqwa.
If you make it out there, check out Wish You Were Here at 8 Newburgh St, Kon Trubkovich’s show at Museum 52, and Scott Campbell’s show at Lazarides.

Came back to NY to finish installing “One of a Kind” part of The Drop- up til Oct 17th: 521 W 25th St. 4th floor. www.thedropnyc.org
More to come on that…
