FAQ

Create a piece that is uniquely yours with the help of one of our Fine Jewelry experts. We offer a range of custom options, from bespoke to one-of-a-kind designs.

What is an Old Mine Cut?

An old mine cut is an early style of diamond cutting that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These diamonds were typically cut by hand and in natural light or by candlelight with the aim to preserve as much carat weight as possible, (as opposed to being optimally cut for maximum brilliance today). These stones feature a cushion-like shape with a high crown, deep pavilion, small table, and a large open culet.

Both antique cuts and their modern-day counterparts are typically cut with 58 facets. However, the facets of anitque diamonds are larger and more irregular, reflecting light in a softer way, evocative of a flickering candle rather than the high brilliance of modern cuts. Today, they are loved by both vintage and modern lovers of fine jewelry alike, and can be incorporated into both vintage and modern engagement ring settings to create a ceremonial style that's all your own.

What is the difference between an Antique Diamond and an Old Mine Cut Diamond?

“Antique cut” is a broader term that includes various diamond cuts used before the modern round brilliant was developed. Spanning from the inception of the cut in the Georgian Era (1714-1837) to the Art Deco Era (1915-1935), this category of diamonds includes these top 3 most recognizeable diamond cut diamonds types: old mine cuts, which are mostly cushion cuts and characterized by their 58 facets., old European cuts, which are most commonly round shapes and are characterized by their flattened cutlet point that creates a unique flash appearance from the top angles of the stone. Rose cuts, which generally have between 3 to 24 triangular facets on a domed top, with a flat base.

Each has unique characteristics as they were typically cut by hand before modern technology or electricity. Their Old World charm makes them well sought-after in today's markets. Many of them have been passed down through generations or aquired by jewelry and diamond dealers through estate sales. These stones are often dismantled from their original antique setting and available limited quantities to be set into your modern setting.

If you're looking to incorporate an heirloom Antique Cut, you can learn more about the Anna Sheffield custom process here.

Which diamond colors and diamond shapes are found in most old mine cuts?

Many original old mine stones tend to be cushion cuts and warmer tones, falling into the J to M color range, giving them a soft, romantic glow. This is due to the limitations of diamond cutting of the time. As there were no precision tools or electricity, hand-cut diamonds were not cut for maximum light reflection like they are today. It is due to modern technology that diamond cutters can facet a diamond specifically to disguise color and look whiter, which is what we commonly see in the characteristics of modern cuts such as the brilliant cut diamond.

Today, many of the higher color antique diamonds have been re-cut with modern methods to enhance brilliance. However, finding old mine cuts in higher colors or fancy colors is definitely possible. Choosing a higher color antique or old mine cut diamond with be dependant on current market availibility, shape preference, and budget.

Can a lab diamond be cut into a Old Mine Cut or Antique style stone?

Absolutely! Since diamond cutters are able to manufacture old mines with modern technology, it's possible to source one that combines the eco-consciousness of a lab diamond with the vintage charm of an old mine cut. One of our in-house gemologists will be available to source a lab old mine stone, and for more rare shapes, we can always custom-cut a lab diamond.

What is the price range typically found in Old Mine Cuts and Antique Diamond engagement rings?

Connecting with our team will give you clear understanding of the current market availability based on your specifications and budget, and we'll do our best to find an antique stone or old mine cut that you'll adore as a centerpiece of your engagement ring that fits in the budget you're looking for.
